Yoga started in India and has been around for 5000 years. It is a way for uniting the soul, body and mind for experiencing tranquility. There are different types of yoga, but they all are for doing the same thing. Rid the body of stress and bring peace to the mind while achieving optimal physical health.

There are yogas that can help a person rise out of their state of consciousness that they are in. If it is paired with relaxing music the senses concentrate on the music and the person is drawn to a whole new level of perceptions. When one is taken to this level, there is now state of harmony being experienced throughout the person.

Yoga teaches a person how to control their breathing. This is known as pranayama. When a person is breathing correctly the mind along with the body are going to feel strength and vitality. By bringing energy into the body the brain is able to develop in different parts. This can also keep some diseases away by making the immunity system stronger.

For reaching emotional bliss and eliminating one’s veil of life there is meditation. Spiritual insight can be reached by channeling the soul and mind through meditation. It is able to remove fluctuations in the mind and a person will experience blissful stillness. A person is able to concentrate better since calmness and peace has been reached. Music is a key for meditation and achieving this peace of mind. The music is able to submit a soothing and tranquil sound that helps the person relax and feel at peace.

Music has become a big part when practicing yoga. By listening to the soothing sounds a person will enhance their meditative mood within their self. Music stores everywhere are now offering DVDs and CDs for yoga. When listening to the music the body, soul, and mind will feel refreshed. The listener is able to be taken to a mystic high because the deep spiritual connection is experienced with these artists.

Bhastrika Pranayama – (Bellows Breath)

“Too much stoking burns out the boiler of the engine. So also too much practice of Bhastrika wears out the system as the breathing process is forceful” – BKS Iyengar.

The meaning of the Sanskrit word ‘Bhastrika’ is ‘Bellows’, thus the Bhastrika Pranayama is called the ‘bellows breath’. This form of breathing increases the flow of air into the body to produce inner heat at the physical and subtle level.

Bhastrika breathing is a dynamic and highly energizing abdominal breathing exercise requiring a large expenditure of physical energy. It is accomplished by breathing abdominally at the rate of 1-4 breaths per second, with inhalations and exhalations equally emphasized and equally active.

Beginners are advised to practice Bhastrika at a slow breath rate, using 2-second inhalation and 2-seconds exhalation; (15 breaths per minute) with no force on inhalation and exhalation. With regular practice of this pranayama the abdominal muscles will become stronger, so the speed can be increased to 30 breaths per minute, using 1-second inhalation and 1-second exhalation.

Intermediate and advanced students may practice at medium breath rate (1-2 breaths per second) and at fast breath rate (3-4 breaths per second).

Note: Be aware of hyperventilating, and built your capacity slowly.

The Bellows breath activates and invigorates the liver, pancreas, spleen and abdominal muscles, thus toning the digestive system and improving digestion.

During Bhastrika there is an increase in the exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into and out of the bloodstream. This action stimulates the metabolic rate, producing heat and flushing toxins and waste out of the body.

This breathing strengthens and balances the nervous system, bringing peace and tranquility to the mind in preparation for meditation.

The Bhastrika pranayama brings many benefits to a practitioner. However, in some health conditions this particular breathing exercise is not recommended.

Three important reasons (out of many) not to do Bhastrika:

1) Anyone suffering from High blood pressure should not practice this breathing.

2) Person with poor lungs capacity should not attempt Bellows breath.

3) If you are suffering from hernia avoid this pranayama.

Caution: Always check with your doctor if you have any doubts or concerns regarding the suitability of this posture for you. It is best to perform this yoga posture in presence of a qualified yoga teacher.

Yoga, in Sanskrit, means, “to yoke together”. This is translated to mean the union of individual self, the ‘Atma,’ with the universal self, the ‘Paramatma.’ There are different methods to achieve this union. When we say Yoga in the present-day context, particularly in the Western countries, what we aim for is the harmony between body, mind and spirit.

From archeological sites dated 3,000 B.C., from the Indus valley civilization, it is clear that the yogic practice is at least that old. In the second century A.D., the yoga knowledge was collected and compiled into a treatise named ‘Yoga Sutra,’ by Patanjali.

Patanjali’s ‘Ashantanga Yoga,’ or eight-limbed yoga, taught eight steps of yoga to be done in the same sequence. The first limb is ‘Yama.’ The five yamas are non-violence, truthfulness, not stealing, continence and non-covetousness. The next limb is Niyama. The five niyamas are cleanliness, contentment, spiritual austerities, studying the self and the scriptures, and surrender to God. The third limb is ‘Asanas,’ a set of postures that create a union between the body and the mind so that the aspirant is able to concentrate his mind better. The next one, Pranayama, is a breath-regulating practice. It is not a breathing exercise, though it improves the respiratory system. The main purpose is to direct the ‘Prana,’ or life force, into proper channels. These four limbs prepare the body and mind for the next four, which are spiritual practices.

The fifth limb, ‘Pratyahara,’ practices drawing the consciousness from external objects and direct it inwards. One becomes detached from the world, and observes oneself as a witness. The next yoga, ‘Dharana,’ is a concentration practice to gather the full consciousness and concentrate it to observe its own core. The seventh limb, ‘Dhyana,’ is meditation. In this practice, the mind is made free from thoughts and becomes aware of itself. The eighth and final stage is “Samadhi,” where the practitioner reaches a state of ecstasy.

Through there is no particular religious practice involved in the complete yoga, it is obvious that it is not for everyone. Most of us are interested in Hatha Yoga. The asanas make our body supple and strong, and the meditation relaxes and reduces stress in the mind. The effects of yoga on the body and mind are so good that it is worth taking it up.

All forms of Yoga are being given a closer look by medical and scientific communities, due to the benefits of living a Yogic lifestyle. We often read or hear about the benefits of Yoga poses (asana), Yogic breathing techniques (pranayama), or meditation.

Yet, the benefits of taking Yoga lessons into daily life are not usually taken into account. The Yogic lifestyle, itself, is hard to put under a microscope. Love: To show kindness to others, and all creatures, makes sleeping a lot easier. True compassion is not an easy task. This requires the ability to forgive others. Compassion for all creatures is most difficult. To become a vegetarian may be impossible for many people, but hardly anyone would allow a colony of termites or carpenter ants to devour their home without putting up a fight.

There has to be a reasonable level of moderate love in all matters. We must avoid extremes in our thoughts, actions, and our failure to act. Showing loving kindness toward others is a natural healing remedy. It allows us to discard negative feelings, which drain us of good health.

That said: Your compassion is not an open invitation to be taken advantage of by those who do not value your acts of kindness. Loving kindness is not weakness or foolishness. To accept others the way they are, without judging them, is a deep form of compassion.

As parents, we guide our children with the best of intentions. However, children have minds of their own, and do not always follow our advice. Do we love our children less because they refuse our opinions or instructions?

Of course not, because we accept each child the way he or she is. All children are uniquely different. As time passes, each parent begins to realize it is impossible to create an exact mold that a child will adhere to. We can do our best, but parenting is an art form and a constant work in progress.

People often forget that friendships are based upon this same principle. We must accept friends as they are. Good intentions are not enough, when you invade a friend’s “space” and tell him or her how to live. You can be a good friend, and a living example of Yoga, by giving compassionate advice; that is useful, when it is asked for.
