Women are often targeted by attackers because we make a few common mistakes about personal safety that present us as easy crime victim prospects.

A few things to remember as we get into more detail about the common mistakes we make that put us in danger.

Attackers are insecure, have low self-esteem, feel out of control of their own lives and choose to control someone or something else in order to feel powerful again. Attackers look for those who appear weaker than they are (mentally, physically) to attack. Attacks may be verbal, mental, emotional or physical.
Too Accommodating

Women tend to be accommodating because we want people to like us and we enjoy being helpful. Although these traits are not bad they may allow us to be taken advantage of and pushed too far. This is where an attacker, known or unknown to you sees weakness and opportunity.

Solution: Establish and enforce personal boundaries. Know what distance you are willing to go and go no further. This will keep you from giving your power away to someone else.

Ignoring Gut Feelings

As women, we are generally much more in tune with our intuition or gut feelings than men are. However, we also tend to overlook, ignore and justify actions that are not in line with our gut feelings in order to be liked and to be nice.

Solution: Realize gut feelings are survival instincts you were born with. They will always lead you the right way. Follow them.

Automatic Trust

Because women have been raised to be nice and do good things for others, we often trust untrustworthy people automatically. We can all think back to a time we trusted someone and should not have.

Solution: Trust you gut feeling (intuition) without questioning or trying to justify it. It doesn’t have to be logical to be right. You will “feel” if someone is trustworthy or not. A good personal boundary to establish and enforce is, “If it feels wrong, avoid it.”

Although women may be targeted by attackers, these safety tips will help all of us avoid the personal safety mistakes that portray us as good victim prospects.

As women, we are extra tuned in to what people are saying even when they are not speaking words. This second Women’s Personal Safety Secret should, therefore, make a lot of sense. Making the tips into habit will take a little more work but will be well worth it!

We know, from Personal Safety Secret #1, that the attacker mindset includes low self-esteem, feeling insecure and out of control. This means attackers are already in a weakened state. In order to get the “power fix” they desire, they must succeed at the attack. This inspires them look for someone who appears weaker than themselves.

Looking weak and being weak are two different things. You can be very confident but look weak simply by being distracted with a cell phone conversation. You can also have a terrible day but portray yourself as strong and confident just by adjusting your body language. Consider that whatever you are feeling on the inside is showing on the outside and attackers are quite good at reading body language.

Confident body language is very important to teach children. Pedophiles use it to select victims. We all need to know how to hold our heads up extra high when we are not feeling our strongest to counteract the normal slump that accompanies a challenging day.

Since attackers are insecure cowards looking to attack people weaker than they are, all of us need to look big, strong and confident. Here’s how:

Six Tips for Confident Body Language

Hold your head up – this makes you physically taller so that you look bigger, stronger and more confident. Keep your shoulders back – it is physically impossible to look weak when your shoulders are back. Look side to side as you walk – this makes you look aware of your surroundings. Swing your arms – this makes you bigger because you literally take up more space in front of and behind you. Walk with purpose – this makes you look strong and confident.. Be ready to yell, drop what you are carrying and run – material possessions are not worth risking your life for.

Now, you will be more conscious of other people’s body language and that of your own. If you are a woman with kids or teens, you will notice how much more confidently they come across after they develop confident body language into a habit. You will feel more confident about their safety and will have fun sharing these tips with other men and women!
