Women's Safety Information

Getting to the heart of the matter

Women, children and the elderly are the most common victim prospects for attackers but everyone of every age is vulnerable. That is the bad news but there is plenty of good news too!

Something as simple as using your voice correctly and knowing the correct things to yell make your voice your #1 weapon.

It’s as simple as that.

If you are like me, you learned what to scream if you were in danger, right? This was good in theory but far too ineffective for reality.

Here’s the deal:

Screaming is weak and defensive Yelling is strong and offensive Most of the things we were taught to scream don’t work I’ll tell you what does work
Screaming vs. Yelling

When screaming is heard, it is thought to be either playing or too dangerous a situation to get involved in. Most people want to avoid “helping” for fear of getting hurt. (They are smart!)

When yelling is heard, it sounds like something is about to happen but hasn’t yet. It is strong and gets a completely different kind of attention than screaming does. Most people are interested in helping to prevent something.

What To Yell

Stop! Back Off! 911!

These are the most effective things to yell. We won’t go over the others we have heard all our lives because there is no reason to fill our minds further with things that don’t work.

How To Yell

Inhale to fill your lungs and tummy Deepen your voice by putting your tongue low in your mouth Yell until you are out of air, inhale, yell again Yell so that people blocks away can hear you
Benefits Of Yelling

Startles the attacker – catching the attacker off-guard puts you in control temporarily Calls attention to your situation – the last thing an attacker wants is everyone looking his or her way Makes you stronger – gets your adrenaline flowing in order to help you think clearly, strike harder and run faster
When To Yell

When you have a bad gut feeling about someone who is approaching (usually after they have disregarded your stern “Stop”) When someone grabs a hold of you without your permission When someone is taking you with them against your will As you are running to safety

You are now capable of scaring off most attackers before they approach, during an approach and in the third phase of attack – physical contact. Women, please share this information with kids, teens and men as everyone needs to know how to use their voice as their #1 weapon. As women, we are more likely to seek safety information than men so it is great when we can share it with loved ones and coworkers of both genders and all ages.

Most women are less than eager to get trained in self-defense but we all need some tips on simple ways to avoid becoming a victim and repel instead of attract attackers. Fortunately, sometimes the simplest things work the best.

Attackers prefer victims go quietly so no one notices what is going on and gets a description of them resulting in their arrest. Now that we know what they are looking for, we can be the opposite. Here are a couple things to note:

Nine out of ten people gasp and hold their breath when startled or scared so attackers have the advantage already Making noise startles the attacker (turnabout is fair play) and calls attention to your situation

When you gasp and hold your breath, the adrenaline that is automatically produced to deal with stress freezes you quicker and longer, and that’s when the majority of people get hurt. Adrenaline is produced to give you the fight or flight option. It helps you think clearly, run faster and strike harder under stress. In order for it to circulate and help instead of hinder you, you must be breathing. This is where making noise comes in…

Yelling is a great way to make noise and get your adrenaline circulating at the same time because you expel all the air in your lungs and automatically take another breath. Viola! Circulation, adrenaline, strength, speed, clear thought, a startled attacker and everyone looking your direction! Notice I said, “yelling” and not “screaming?” That is because screaming is weak and defensive and yelling is strong and offensive. The three best things to yell: Stop, 911, Back Off!

Other great ways to make noise:

Honking your horn Sounding your vehicle alarm Throwing or knocking over something loud (like metal)

Honking your horn is probably not what comes to mind first when you are startled unless you are startled by another driver, right? But just think about how much attention a honked horn gets…and that is the idea after all; even if it is about your personal safety and not about your car.

We know that most people **** the sound of vehicle alarms and rarely even consider that something is being broken into or stolen but again, think how many people are alerted by the sound. You can be sleeping at night with your vehicle in the garage or driveway and sound your alarm if an intruder breaks in.

You know the movies where someone is running from a bad guy through the kitchen of a restaurant, knocking over metal tables and shelves behind them? Not only does this make an instant obstacle course but it makes a heck of a lot of noise in the process. Maybe you are in a store and rake your arm down a shelf pulling products onto the floor to make noise and draw attention.

There is nothing safe or heroic about going quietly with an attacker in the hopes he or she will not hurt you. In fact, it can easily cost you your life. If someone wants to take you against your will, their intention is to hurt you.

Teach your kids this safety tip too. I can’t tell you how difficult it is to get some children to practice yelling in my Safe Kids Class! They have been programmed that yelling gets them in trouble and they need to know it can get them out of trouble as well.

Remember attackers want quiet, uninterrupted time with their victim and the longer you are with them, the more power they have. Make a lot of noise and be more trouble than you’re worth.

And ALWAYS trust your gut feelings to know what to do because sometimes submission is the best option. A good question to ask yourself is, “How is the best way to handle this situation?” Your brain will answer whatever you ask it. Make sure and ask good, empowering questions to get the same kind of answers.

During a physical attack, there are several things we can do. First of all, realize this is the third phase of the attack! The other two phases are more easily handled than this third, more dangerous phase. Many people, women in particular, are afraid of hurting someone even if it means saving their own life and that can be deadly. How about an option that can work in many circumstances, comes across as nurturing, changes the game and may save your life?

Fight or Flight Syndrome

We’ve heard about the “fight or flight” syndrome. This is how it works. When you are startled or scared, your body produces adrenaline, which will help you think clearly, run faster and strike harder under pressure.

Most women are less than eager to get trained in self-defense but we all need some tips on simple ways to avoid becoming a victim and repel instead of attract attackers. Fortunately, sometimes the simplest things work the best.

This morning’s local news featured a report of a suspected serial rapist in the area. At least 7 women have been attacked and brutalized in their own homes. In response to this article, I offer 3 safety measures that women can take to protect themselves.

Tip #1: Buy a peephole kit for each entry door into your home or apartment, and install them immediately. If you don’t want to do the job yourself, have your boyfriend, brother, neighbor, or landlord do it. Then, don’t open your door to anyone you do not recognize. A rapist doesn’t care what hour of the day it is; he will attack when it’s most convenient for him. If someone comes to your door in the middle of the night, maybe saying there’s been an accident and he needs help, call 911 right away. If he’s on the level, he’ll get the help he requested. If he was trying to fool you to get inside your home, you’ve kept yourself safe and alerted the police. (They might even be able to catch him before he gets far.)

What if you look through your new peephole and see someone holding up a badge? Same thing applies-do not be blindly trusting and open the door to a rapist. Call the police and find out if they sent an officer to your address, and for what purpose. If it turns out that the guy standing on the doorstep is legit, great. He’ll understand why you needed to double-check his ID. If the officer on the phone says that no one was dispatched to your location, that means an imposter-wearing a costume and pretending to be a law enforcement officer-tried to get into your house. But you kept him out and yourself safe.

Tip #2: Rent a PO box and use that as your address on checks, forms, and written applications. A small post office box is inexpensive, and it’s a great way to protect your private information. Plus, many people use PO boxes for business mail, so using it as an address is not unusual.

It seems like, everywhere we go these days, we’re asked for personal data. And this often has nothing to do with the product or service we’re interested in; it’s merely a way for companies to get marketing feedback. But how do we know the trustworthiness of the people we’re giving our information to? Or those who will see it further down the line? The guy at the cell phone store, the receptionist at the salon, and the cashier at the supermarket where you use your Best Customer card… these people don’t need to know where you live. Granted, they’re probably not interested-but someone else may be.And that someone may have access to confidential files. You don’t want them to have access to your home address.

Tip#3:Keep your car keys next to your bed at night. First, if you need to leave your home in a hurry, you won’t waste any time looking for them. Second-and more important-most cars now come equipped with alarm buttons on the key chain. Test yours; it can probably activate your car’s alarm from inside the house. If you hear someone creeping around outside or trying to break in, switch on the alarm. It will most likely send a would-be attacker running. Then, make sure you’re safe, and call 911.

Brandi Wheeler asked:

Article written by: Brandi Wheeler

What would you do if someone was robbing you while walking down the street? What would you do if you were about to be *****? What would you do if someone was stealing from your business? What would you do to defend yourself from an attacker?

You may be thinking that this could never happen to you, but according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, an estimated 1,417,745 violent crimes occurred nationwide in 2006. When data for 2006 to 2005 were compared, the estimated volume of violent crime increased 1.9 percent. Therefore, according to these statistics, it is more likely for you to be a victim of a violent crime.

Hopefully you will never be a victim of a crime, but let’s say you are…what would you do to protect yourself? Would you call the police if you could or scream for HELP? Would you pull out your pistol or hand gun, if you had one, to defend yourself? Do you know self defense maneuvers? These are all great ideas, but what if you can’t do these things or you don’t have any kind of protection?

A unique and powerful way to stop someone in their tracks, but is not fatal, is a cell phone stun gun. This stun gun looks just like a cell phone so a perpetrator may be less aware that you are about to plug him with 950,000 volts of electricity through his or her body. With this shock, it will stop anyone dead in their tracks. Then this would buy you time to call 911 on your ‘real phone’ or cry out for HELP. If the perpetrator tries to get up, then you can easily shock him again, but it is doubtful he or she will try to rob, steal, attack or **** again.

This cell phone stun gun is not fatal compared to a hand gun, pistol, shot gun or knife. It is small enough to keep in your purse or pocket. Being that the stun gun looks just like a cell phone, no one would really know what it is until you show them or tell them.

The “Pretender Cell Phone Stun Gun” is just one of the many items you can find at http://www.protection-power.com to help protect yourself. Please visit the website to learn more about how you can fight the war on crime because your safety is our business!
