For those that are looking to learn how to lose weight effectively, this guide will serve as a starting point. Fat loss is one of those processes I like comparing with gardening. In order to have a beautiful garden you have to prepare the soil, plant the seeds, and water it day after day. A few days of no water is fine, but go a week with no water and your gains may just “die off”.

In weight loss, the “watering” is your dedication and commitment to a diet. I’m not going to mention any specific diet to follow. The reason is because whatever diet you follow, even if it is the most obscure and unknown diet, will work as long as you’re committed and the diet is cutting calories.

The Diet Doesn’t Matter!

So many people get caught up in picking the best and most effective diet out there. They try the most popular diets and when they don’t work they try another one. It’s as if dieters are looking for the “diet” to save their fat loss.

Truth is, learning how to lose weight effectively is not based on the diet system you follow as much as it’s based on your full commitment and dedication to the diet.

You see, to be successful on a diet you must be committed at least a month to it. And you also need to be following exactly what it is telling you. The more exact you follow it, the better results you’ll get. So many people start following a diet and quit within a week. They didn’t lose any weight so they discount the diet as ineffective. What was really ineffective was their lack of following the diet properly and staying with it for longer than a week.

Time is of the Utmost Value

It doesn’t matter if you’re following the most advanced diet out there. Time is necessary to learn how to lose weight effectively. The “target” amount of weight you should be shooting for is around two to three pounds of fat per week. This is what you should be aiming for. Anything higher is considered too much weight in a week. Usually this excess weight loss over two pounds is nothing more than water, which can easily gained back by drinking lots of water! The weight loss could also be muscle mass which is something you don’t want to lose.

The Necessities of Whatever Diet You Tread With

Although the particular diet you pick isn’t of much importance, what is important is that the diet does a few things.

First off, your diet MUST focus on the reduction of calories. This is essential. If you are not eating less than you burn on a daily basis, weight loss will not take place. End of story. No amount of “wishing” or “hoping” will cure this.

Many diet programs don’t focus on counting calories. And this is fine as long as you are still eating less than you burn. But how are you to know if you don’t count your calories? For diet programs like this I recommend following them for at least two weeks. If you haven’t lost around two pounds per week then you are eating too much. The next step would be to start cutting calories (not meals) or begin counting them!

No Starving

Although I said any diet will work, I do advise you to stay away from diets that focus on starvation. On average, you should eat around 500 calories less than your body burns on a daily basis for fat loss. Anything less than this is often quite difficult and less efficient.

The reason is because when you eat too little calories your body goes into “starvation” mode. In this mode, your body begins to store fat and slow down the metabolism. This is a reaction to not enough food and preparation for this lack of food. It’s as if your body is preparing you for “winter” and the lack of food by storing extra fat.

This is why eating only one meal a day doesn’t usually work at getting rid of fat.

When such institutions such as the Harvard School of Public Health and UCLA publish studies into anything to do with diets or weight loss, it makes good sense to take note of what they are saying. I get messages from my subscribers and friends both, saying they just don’t have the time to eat right or exercise. This not only happens at the beginning of the year, but all year long. I do in fact see a rise at the beginning of the New Year from those people who make their resolutions a weight loss resolution. These are regular people like you or I. They are busy moms and dads, professionals, young adults and even late teen students. All with one thing in common: they can find no time in their jammed packed days, evenings or nights.

With all the responsibilities and time constraints, more and more say they just can’t keep themselves healthy enough to get down to their optimal weight. Most are telling me with their schedules, they are finding it hard to even maintain their current weight and as time has been passing, they have been putting on more and more. Some are moving up a little at a time, others are seeing jumps in their weight or gaining weight in stages. That is where I fit in. Is there a way we can all live healthier and exercise as part of our everyday life?

When most people think about weight loss, we all think about the things we always see and hear. Dieting and Exercise! We relate these two things as TIME. The truth of the matter and the “FACT” about them is not talked about, is they do not necessarily go together. They are two very different things. Nutritional intake and exercise don’t really go together like we are taught to believe.

After talking to experts in weight loss, all have said the person looking to loose weight or even maintain the weight they are, should look into and have a nutritional plan. If a person has and follows a nutritional plan and uses no exercise, they will in fact loose weight. Provided they have no medical issues or underlying physical problems. It is when someone falls off the wagon, for a lack of better term, these experts see the weight gains. When people don’t follow the plan, but workout or exercise faithfully, most don’t loose any weight. But they can’t see it because they may not know the importance of the nutritional plan. If you have tried working out but not changing your diet, you may already know this to be true. Make your eating the priority. It may take you a lot less time.

Now, knowing this is so important in weight loss, you can make some changes in your nutrition that may be easier for you to cope with and help with the weight you are trying to loose. The experts have seen people loose as much as twenty pounds with these changes with no formal exercise regiment.

Get rid of as much or all the dairy in your diet. The more you get rid of the better. This is the number one reason why people are having problems loosing weight. We were always told, “Dairy does a body good”. This is very far from the truth. It causes digestive problems for most people, clogs arteries and inflammation in the body and causes weight gain. Once again, most don’t know this. Get your calcium from supplements and green leafy vegetables. If you have been gaining weight or have tried with trouble in the past, you may see automatic weight loss without dairy intake.

Another change would be to drink only water. If you can eliminate sugar intake along with all the sugar and diet soda and drinks, this will cause a weight loss dramatically. Some studies have shown a loss of as much as fifteen pounds with the elimination of diet coke form your diet. This study was done without changing any other part of a persons diet. Although this along with other is suppose to be “Diet” the sweeteners in these drinks can be worse for your body than sugar. Stay away from Equal or Aspartame, Splenda and Sweet & Low. These artificial sweeteners can be toxic to your body and cause you to gain more weight than sugar itself.

Try to use better judgment when it comes to snacks throughout the day and evenings. Fruits and nuts are a quick choice you can make while in a rush for something to eat in your grocery stores. If you find you are buying fruit and often throwing it away, try buying them in a canned form or even in the pop top forms many have turned to.
Most of the super stores out there today have health food sections. Make a point of going thru them and trying some new things you may find to be filling yet healthy for you. Take some time to find healthier foods to eat. Look into a nutritional program for yourself. Stick with the intake that is recommended.

You may find that loosing weight will not be as hard and time consuming as you may think. If you can add in some exercise, that would be a plus, but just eating differently can make all the difference you are looking for. Try not to make this harder than it has to be. Don’t use time as your reason to do nothing about weight loss.

Weight Loss Tip #3: Throw Out Temptation

In order to remain faithful to your weight loss regime, you must remove all temptation from your cabinets, freezer, and vehicle. Replace the candy and fatty foods with the right foods. Sugar-free gelatin and pudding is a wonderful way to take care of that sweet tooth in a correct portion without adding a lot of calories. Low-fat popcorn or low-fat flavored popcorn is another wonderful replacement to fatty snacks.

Try not to eat unhealthy snacks for a couple of weeks. Keep a bag of crunchy vegetables, like carrots handy to help with hunger. Most crunchy veggies tend to satisfy you more and are lower in calories.

Weight Loss Tip #4: Find Support

Weight loss is a challenge alone, but with a partner, it will seem much easier. Look for a weight loss support group on-line or a forum. Facebook even has support groups. If you prefer, not to have someone on-line then start your own support group in your home or someone else’s home. Otherwise, all weight loss companies offer a support group or sometimes a little one-on-one counseling.

Your support groups can include family, friends, coworkers or even your neighbors. Your group could be as large or as small as you like. Ask everyone you know to support you in your weight loss endeavors with some encouragement.

.Weight Loss Tip #5: Stop Bad Habits

Most learned or old habits are hard to break. It’s time we make a change. We do not have to eat everything that is on our plate. Most of grew up knowing that we must eat everything on our plates because there are starving children in Africa. It is okay to leave a little food on our plates every now and again.

We need to listen to our bodies and stop eating when we are full. We must eat smaller portions of our food. We need to avoid having seconds. Try to eat 6 small meals instead of three large ones. Eat breakfast, have a morning snack, eat lunch, have an afternoon snack, eat dinner, have an evening snack.

When you eat out at a restaurant either order from the children’s menu or ask when you order for the waitress to bring you a to go box. When the food arrives, place half or more of the food into the to go box.

Weight Loss Tip #6: Add Variety

You need a little variety in your life. This goes for food too. You will get bored eating the same thing week in and week out. Once this boredom hits, you will slip back into your old habits. Eat a little something from each of the major food groups, including fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy, whole grains, and fats.

In order to stay energized, eat five to six small meals everyday. This also helps your metabolism. Eat a protein with most meals, including eggs, beans, lean cuts of meats as well as fish. We need to try to eat a minimum of five servings and up to nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily. If you are watching your sugars, also watch the amount of fruit you are consuming. You really need to eat more vegetables than fruit. Also you need to eat a variety of both fruits and vegetables. Don’t just eat the same foods daily. Remember the key is variety.

The bread, pasta, and cereal you consume needs to be whole grain. If you have never had whole grain pasta, then mix with regular pasta and gradually add more and more whole grains until you are used to it. It holds true for bread especially if you make your own. The complex carbohydrates and high fiber in whole grain bread and pasta help to speed up your metabolism. The dairy products you consume should be low-fat or fat-free.

Also make sure you are eating good fats, such as olive or safflower oil. Your body needs a certain amount of the good fats. Make sure that you read your labels and stay away from foods that have trans-fats. Trans-fats are extremely bad for you.

Weight Loss Tip #7: Satisfy the Sweet Tooth

On your weight loss journey there will be times when you will crave something sweet. If you want it then have a small piece of whatever you are craving. It is better to have a small piece of it than ignoring your craving and then bingeing because you have deprived yourself from it for so long. Don’t get into a habit of eating this way daily though. It is okay to give into the craving from time to time, but not daily.

Weight Loss Tip #8: Watch What You Drink

Of course the number one choice to drink is water clean of chlorine. You need a minimum of six glasses of good water. You can also drink green tea. Consumption of green tea can help with weight loss.

Several people do not track or think about the amount of calories in their beverages. A regular flavored cola has more than 100 calories and 10 teaspoons of sugars. Fruit drinks are also high in sugar and calories. Switch to diet drinks and drink more green tea and water.

Beware of your alcohol consumption. Most alcoholic drinks have lots of sugar and are high in calories. Alcohol turns to fat and sugar in your body. Limit how often you have a drink. Save it for special occasions and try to consume lower calorie beer or wine.

Weight Loss Tip #9: Get Active

Getting active is an import key to weight loss. We need to get moving if we want to lose weight and keep it off. However, sometimes when you start an exercise program, you go from couch potato to exercise fanatic. You want to gradually start the exercise regime over time.

Start off with just walking. Walking takes no special equipment other than a good pair of shoes. Walk at a pace that is good for you and walk for twenty minutes, three times a week. As time goes on, walk a little faster and add more time. You can add strength training twice a week. Start with something light like two cans of soup then gradually move to light hand weights.

Exercising will burn excess fat and calories. The strength training helps build lean muscle mass. The more lean muscle mass you have the more calories you burn due to your higher metabolic rate.
