Women's Safety Information

Getting to the heart of the matter

Category: Home And Family

Our homes are our havens and when we are in our homes we need to feel safe and secure. Locks help assure nobody comes in and gas and smoke detectors help protect us from within our homes assuring that if a gas leak or fire occurs we know about it soon enough to get to safety. Everybody should have a gas detector and a smoke detector in their home; it’s as simple as that. If for some reason you don’t have a gas detector or your gas detector is old then perhaps you could use a little help in what to look for when buying a gas detector.

First of all, check to see how many gases the gas detector can detect. Most people just need a gas detector capable of detecting carbon monoxide however if you live in an area where you may be potentially exposed to more gases you will certainly want a gas detector capable of picking up all of those. Just make sure you know what you need so you will know what to shop for.

Another important aspect of a home gas detector is battery life. You will want a detector that runs on batteries and that has a long life. If the battery life is too short and your gas detector dies then it won’t be protecting you. Make sure your home gas detector has an alarm, light, or something of that nature that goes off when the battery is dying so that you will know to replace it.

If you live near a landfill, refinery, power plant, or anything of that nature then a Minirae gas detector system will alert you at any time there are unsafe levels of gas in the air. There is nothing wrong with taking precautions to ensure you and your family are safe and RAE Systems has a variety of gas detectors for your home that will allow you to sleep well at night.

In this day and age we should not rely on companies and our government to let us know when there are unsafe levels of gases in the air. Instead, we should take some responsibility as well and have a gas detector in our home to help us stay safe at all times.

Women are often accused of carrying too much ‘rubbish’ in their handbags but if we didn’t carry such essentials then who else would?!

Below we’ve listed our top 20 items which should live in every woman’s handbag – without these items we would be lost!

Money – probably an obvious choice but how many times have you left the house and forgotten your purse? Get rid of your loose change instead of collecting it in a jar at home.

Mobile phone – what on earth did we do before mobile phones were invented? Well I guess we used smelly telephone boxes but that meant that people couldn’t get hold of us if they were running late, also it meant that we would have to talk super fast before the beeps told us that the call was ending – urgh.

Credit card- a girl’s best friend or a girl’s worst enemy depending on how you look at it. Going on a shopping trip? Make sure you take your plastic friend with you for a little day out.

Shopper or old plastic bag – plastic bags are evil. Fact. When out shopping don’t a) ruin your outfit by coordinating it with a tacky branded bag or b) add to the ever-increasing land fill problems by using up another plastic bag. Reuse an old plastic bag or use a cotton shopper that can fold up inside your handbag instead.

Book/magazine – you will regret not bringing a book with you when you’re sat in a cafe/restaurant alone and have nothing to look at but the smoochy couple sat at the table next to you.

Diary – unless you have a fancy mobile phone you’ll need something in your bag which acts as an organiser. Otherwise you’ll forget what day of the week it is.

Makeup – how many times have you gone straight from work to a bar or restaurant feeling slightly ‘naked’ as the makeup on your face has miraculously disappeared? Don’t let this happen again!

Tissues – toilets without paper, sneezes, hay fever…we all need tissues.

Tampon/San pads – don’t be caught out again, make sure that you always have a tampon with you!

Pen – you’ll need this to write in your diary or your number on his arm.

Keys – you don’t want to be locked out do you? Then don’t forget your keys.

MP3 player with headphones – sunny lunch hour in the park? Lonesome walk across the bridge? This needs a soundtrack.

Safety pins – why doesn’t everyone keep at least one in their bag? Safety pins are so handy. Broken bra strap? No worries. Broken bag? No worries. Broken heart? Well we can’t help you there…

Plasters – sore feet from painful shoes aren’t pleasant at all and can actually ruin your day. Make sure you keep a couple of plasters in your bag. You’ll be so grateful the day you need them.

Comb or hairbrush – cave woman chic? We don’t think so. Tidy yourself up a little and keep your hair sleek.

Vaseline – great for dry lips, dry hands and getting a ring off your finger if it gets stuck.

Moisturiser with SPF – chapped dry skin isn’t fun and neither is sunburn. Make sure you keep a mini bottle or sachet of moisturiser in your bag that contains a medium to high sun protection factor.

Sunglasses – for sunny days, hangovers and those who like to look a little mysterious.

Wet wipes – spillages, dirty hands, armpits – your choice.

Chewing gum/mints – keep fresh throughout the day, for your sake and everyone else’s.

There is a valid reason why a child is often a better judge of character than their parent or any adult for that matter. Gut feelings are survival instincts we were born with and their job is to keep us alive. A child’s gut feelings are raw as they have yet to be taught to gloss over them with politeness or push them aside opting instead for logic. In fact, gut feelings have absolutely nothing to do with logic, which is why they are so often ignored. The problem with ignoring them is that they are the one and only trustworthy mechanism for your personal safety or that of your child.

Uncle Bob Story:

Let’s say Uncle Bob comes to visit every Thanksgiving and stays with your family for 4 days. The whole family adores Uncle Bob as he is fun, always has a good joke and is willing to pitch in and help.

Your 5-year-old comes to you and says he doesn’t like it when Uncle Bob sits him on his lap. You may say something like, “Oh, Uncle Bob is only here for a few days and wants to spend time with his nephew,” or “That’s silly. Go play in your room.”

Let me ask you two questions:

Are you going to force your child to be near people he is uncomfortable with so that you don’t feel embarrassed? If Uncle Bob is a pedophile, are you going to get the vibes not being in his age range or is your child, who is in his age range?

See how easy it is to tell (and show) your child that his survival instincts are unimportant? Do you think he will come to you again in the same situation? Do you think your response could possibly cost him his innocence?

The point I’m making is brutal because of its importance and intensity. We have to reawaken our sensitivities as adults because society has programmed us to avoid making waves. I’m sure you agree that making waves is far superior to enabling predators.

Remember, pedophiles groom children and families to trust and believe in them before they attack. They often target single moms and enter the relationship as the savior, the hero. They provide comfort, stability and a father figure…until they attack. Then people’s lives are changed forever.

What if Uncle Bob is not a pedophile; your child just does not like him, you ask?

Your child will have to go to school and work with people he doesn’t like. Home is supposed to be a safe haven. Letting him know that his feelings are valid and of the utmost importance by helping make other arrangements for Uncle Bob will raise his self-esteem and enhance your relationship with him forever.

There are many excellent Uncle Bobs out there just as there are many excellent men who date and marry single moms. The key is to trust your gut feelings and pay especially close attention to your child’s. Facilitate the growth and awareness of their survival instincts and in so doing, you will automatically acknowledge and trust your own, which will keep the entire family safer from creeps and criminals.

What if you haven’t followed your gut feelings and nothing bad has happened to you?

Super! But when you acknowledge your gut feelings, which you have about every person, place or situation, you will know when one is exceptionally strong. Follow that one. It could save your life or that of a loved one.

Pet People

If you have pets, you’ve probably noticed their behavior around people who turn out to be detrimental is or was different than around those who are of good character. That is because animals rely on their survival instincts (gut feelings) to stay alive and never question them. If they are uncomfortable, there is no question and they do not stick around to be polite. We can and should learn a lot from our pets.

Tips to help you nurture your child’s gut feelings:

Ask your child how he or she feels about people you came in contact with throughout the day. Ask your child which person he or she would feel comfortable asking for help if if was needed. Have a secret code word so that your child can alert you when he or she feels uncomfortable around someone so you can take action and remove yourselves from the situation immediately. Make a pact with your child that you will believe him or her when the topic is safety and that they will always tell the truth about safety situations. In my Safe Kids class, we have both parent and child actually sign an agreement. It makes both parent and child feel more accountable and comforts the child. Always opt for your child’s comfort with people first and yours second.

Now you know why children are often better judges of character than adults even though they may not know what it is they are doing.

When it comes to careers for women, it was normally stability that was given precedence over salary. Over the last decade, with better education and opportunities, women have started coming out of the preoccupation of family carer and home management and instead are choosing more high paying jobs that don’t provide the previous stability yet give them the satisfaction of both career and a higher income.

What are those high paying jobs?

There has been a gradual shift from the traditional careers for women like nurse, dental assistant, etc to non-traditional and alternative posts like general practitioners, dentists, etc. This is a welcome change for women and society in general. When we talk about the best paying careers for women today, we easily notice that the field of medicine is dominating the charts.

o The latest to add in this category is the job of anaesthesiologists. They are the ones who give anaesthesia to patients pre-surgery to render them unconscious during the surgery. This involves proper understanding of the patient’s body and the various risks it faces when a particular anaesthetic is given. This is one of the top paying jobs in the market today.

o The role of an internist often goes unnoticed by most of us. They are the ones who provide non-surgical treatment to the internal organs of the patients when they are inflicted with disease. This is a wonderful profession and internists are renowned for taking home healthy salaries every month.

o One field of medicine has almost always been held by women and why not! It is the post of a gynaecologist. A gynaecologist is a special stream of doctors who handle the diseases related to the reproductive organs of women and childbirth. This is a very important job and women have played a massively important role. No wonder such an important job is paid so well.

o It is time women stopped limiting themselves to dental assistants and instead become a dentist. Apart from dentists being one of the best paid people in the industry, like medical doctors they hold highly respected, responsible positions in society.

o If you try to step aside from the field of medicine and consider other alternatives, you will find there are other equally fulfilling jobs for women. A teacher is one of them. Being a teacher has been a rewarding career for many women both in terms of satisfaction and income (in most locations). In fact, the constant contact with bright minds can be very enriching just on its own.

o Human resources in larger firms is another attractive field where women dominate and earn a good pay package. The human resources department of a company handle the employee welfare, recruitment, social activities, etc. In short, it handles everything that concerns the ‘people’ side of the company.

o The Fashion industry has always attracted women. But apart from being just a skinny model gracing the ramp, women can also hold many other posts that are equally or much more rewarding. Fashion designers, make-up artists, event managers, etc. have amazing take home salaries that can turn a top model turn green with envy!

o The post of financial advisor may be quite a risky job as it involves giving advice on the financial matters of people, but it is a high paying job precisely for that. Women who are good in finance and are comfortable giving advice can have the experience of their lifetime in this career as it is a highly interesting job. People are known to earn enormous amounts once they become established in this field.

The list given above is only indicative. There are many fields like sales, psychiatry, analysis etc. that are also rewarding.

Wow! So how do I get one?

Well, no matter what job you want, they almost always involve some basic qualifications. Traditional jobs which women used to hold required little educational requirements in many cases. However, all the high paying jobs usually require proper, formal education as they are most often more complex. Most require degree qualifications and in the case of a career in medicine, it’s usually a tough five to six years medical degree plus some internship.

Education may seem costly sometimes and you may be tempted to slip back and settle for a low paying job. However, that decision of yours can help you lose a lifetime of comfort and satisfaction. There are scores of educational loans that are being offered to students. You can always pay it back over time after you get those dream jobs.

Finally, some research is all it takes and you can even jump on line at your local library (usually for free) if you don’t have a computer of your own yet!

The numbers do not lie, more women then men start-up new businesses and successfully run existing small businesses every year. In fact they have a nearly 75% better chance of succeeding in their business ventures then men do. One of the best ways to ensure this success is to seek out and receive one of the many government grants for women in business.

Why are grants for women in business a good idea? To answer that question lets look at how most small business are started and financed. Most entrepreneurs will go to their local bank and take out a business line of credit, usually putting their home up as collateral. The second choice is to find someone or a group who is willing to invest in the idea with cash up-front.

For the woman who owns a small business this can create an inordinate amount of stress having this debt hanging over her head. And in the case of putting personal property up as collateral, if the business fails she stands a good chance of losing her home along with her failed business.

Small business grants for women are not subject to repayment. That’s right, once you have the grant you are not required to pay it back which can make starting and running a business much easier. This gives the woman business owner the opportunity to concentrate on growing her business without worrying about paying back any money she may have borrowed. It is important to use the money for what it was intended for otherwise there is a risk of being censured and even penalized to the point that you can be black listed from receiving government business grants.

Here are four quick tips to help find and receive grants for women owned businesses.

1. Use the Internet – The are a abundance of websites that will help you not only find government grants that meet your specific needs they also provide the necessary information you need to successfully apply for and receive this free money.

2. Research – Be sure to thoroughly research each grant and granting agency to find out what their requirements are. There literally grants available for just about everything, from starting a business to paying for college so it is important to target those that meet your goals.

3. Have a Business Plan – This can be one of the most important parts of applying for a business grant for women. This is your road map for success and any grant giving institution will want to see one.

4. Hire an Accountant or Attorney – Getting professional help from someone who is schooled in the world of applying for government grants can pay big dividends. It may cost up front but this cost can be worth thousands of dollars in successful grant requests.

Every year the government gives away millions of dollars in grants for women in business. What better way to start a new business or grow an existing business then with free money that leaves you free to concentrate on making money.

With more women than ever opting to live without a spouse, women’s self defense is more important than ever. Women are feeling more comfortable choosing the single life than ever before, but there are drawbacks. Without another adult in the home, self defense becomes both more difficult and more important. Here are six ways to stay safe at home using self defense items.

1. Use hidden spy cameras to find out about criminal activity in your home. These self defense products can alert you to the presence of someone in your home when you are away. The can be hooked up to a computer so that you can access them from any other computer with internet. You can make your self defense plans based on what you see on the video from the hidden spy cameras.

2. Get personal alarms that can double as door alarms. It is good to have a security system on your home, but it may fail in a power outage. Certain personal alarms can be used to rig the door of the room where you sleep so that you will know if any intruder is near. You can also use these self defense products on main doors to the home. They come in handy when you need extra self defense items.

3. Keep self defense weapons handy. Buy pepper sprays, stun guns, or tasers as you see fit to defend yourself in your own home. Keep them where you can reach them at a moment’s notice. Get them out and test them from time to time. That will not only guarantee that they will work when needed; it will also remind you of where you have them stashed.

4. If you have children, do not leave your women’s self defense products where the kids can reach them. Older children such as teenagers may be very adept at using self defense weapons, but small children may hurt themselves if they are allowed to play with the self defense items. They may also disable the self defense products so that they are not ready for use in an emergency.

5. Conceal your women’s self defense products. You will want to have self defense products put away in locations around your home for easy access. At the same time, you cannot be everywhere in your home at once. If you are in your kitchen, you have to be prepared for the possibility that someone might break in the front door. Any self defense items that are out in plain sight might be used on you instead of the other way around. That is why your stun guns, pepper sprays, and tasers must be stowed where an intruder will not immediately see them.

6. Use women’s self defense DVD’s to learn how to defend yourself. There are dozens of great DVD’s that can help you learn defensive moves to stop an attacker before he can do you any serious harm. DVD’s are a great tool because you can learn from these self defense items in the comfort of your home and refresh your learning as often as necessary.

Staying safe at home is vital if you are to live a free and comfortable life on your own. Women’s self defense products can only help you protect yourself if you know how to use them and use them wisely. Do all you can to practice smart women’s self defense and make your home safe for yourself and your loved ones.
