Being a woman who is home alone allot of the time..and I live in a heavily wooded area…Im thinking of purchasing a shotgun for my home…(for protection only)..and was wondering what is the best gun for the best price…
A Mossberg 500 Pump shotgun……. Home protection shotguns from Mossberg are available in 12 gauge and 20 gauge… The 12 gauge shotguns have a bit of recoil which might be difficult to manage if you are smaller in stature… The 20 gauge shotgun is quite managable to shoot if you are a smaller person….
Consider this Mossberg 500 6 shot 20 gauge shotgun… Order # 50452
If you are larger in stature person and feel you can handle the kick of a 12 gauge then by all means consider the Mossberg 500…. Order # 50411..
They might look the same in the photo’s but they arent. The 20 gauge has a thinner barrel….
Here’s what I keep at my house… An 8 shot Mossberg 500 12 gauge…

I agree that Mossberg is a good way too go but most def go 20ga because you don’t want a gun your afraid to shoot. Controllability, confidence and shoot placement is what it boils down to. Have you considered the type of shells you will be using? I suggest hollow point slugs, and a little practice

I think the Mossberg or the remington are both very high quality and fit the bill, I prefer the Mossberg for those on a budget. I see them on sale quite often. You can get either the 12 gauge if you are not recoil shy, or the 20 gauge if you are. I prefer the 20 barrel because in a pinch I can hunt with it and because the mag tube holds an extra round, but smaller statured people may prefer the 18 1/2 barrel. Avoid a pistol grip as they make it ridiculous trying to aim, stick with a full buttstock. Load it with #7 birdshot first up, so that you can fire it inside at an intruder and not worry about overpenetrating into another room (yes #7 will stop a man across the room). Then load the next round or two with 00 buck shot for longer distance outdoors against an intruder and load the last round or two with slugs. This combination will handle anything from a two legged intruder in the house, to a bear outside the house. If you live alone, and don’t have the overpenetration concern (kids in another room etc) I’d skip the #7 and start off with 00 buckshot. Keep extra shells on the buttstock with nylon shell holder (3 rounds of buck shot and 2 rounds of slugs) so they are handy. I use the mossberg in my home as my night time home defense. It stays in the safe all day, and goes beside the bed on a stand I made just for it, at night. Mine has a flashlight built into the forearm, but you can get by with a good quality, small flashlight in your hand, or even taped to the side of the barrel in a pinch. I did that several times when out camping and things went bump in the night!!
